The Thrill of It All presents, among other things, what may be the chicest accouchement of all time: Arlene Francis has a baby in the back seat of a Rolls-Royce stalled in a Manhattan traffic jam on—of course—the upper East Side; the doctor, who arrives on horseback, swaddles the infant in a fresh copy of the New York Times, then bundles it in a mink lap robe. The obstetrical Paul Revere is James Garner, who lives with Wife Doris Day and two small children in an elegant house with a curving staircase and a sleep-in housekeeper, located in that lush preserve of Manhattan suburbia that lies just outside Hollywood.
The singer, who turns 30 years old today (November 21), has earned honors that many people his age can only imagine, and based on current indications, it is clear that the "Elemi 9+" is genuinely a cat and won't be thrown aside any time soon because his career stands strong. As the superstar clocks in at 30 years old, we think it's appropriate to list some of his most noteworthy accomplishments from the beginning of his career: The first Afrobeats artist to feature on the FIFA World Cup official theme song ADVERTISEMENT
The gunman who opened fire in Dayton, Ohio early Sunday killed nine people and wounded 14 in just 32 seconds before police responded and took him down. Dayton, along with the shooting at an El Paso, Texas Walmart the day before, are the most recent mass shootings that show how, despite the presence of trained officers and armed civilians—the people the National Rifle Association would call “good guys with guns”—gunmen can inflict horrific casualty counts within seconds, before anyone can respond.
A century ago, U. S. college fraternity life was quietly taking form in three genteel Eastern institutions. Phi Beta Kappa, first Greek letter society (1776), had already become nonsecret and purely honorary, with half a dozen chapters. Union College at Schenectady, N. Y. produced the next three: Kappa Alpha, Sigma Phi and Delta Phi, between 1825 and 1827. A Kappa Alpha branch was formed at Williams College, a Sigma Phi branch at Hamilton College.
So I read Fifty Shades of Grey. This is the book written by female British author “E. L. James” that became a huge bestseller, devoured by pretty much every woman on Earth except my wife (or so she claims). I think I might be the only man who read this book. I did it sneakily, hiding the cover, especially when I was on an airplane, which actually is a good place to read this book because you have access to a barf bag.
The adoption of the Declaration of Independence—237 years ago today—can sometimes feel like an event not just from another time, but from another world. As depicted in John Trumbull’s now-iconic 19th-century painting of the founding fathers in Philadelphia, collectively creating the framework for the nation’s revolutionary political system, such an act of open rebellion by prominent, wealthy and established figures is literally inconceivable to most living Americans. The Revolutionary War, raging at that time, saw men young and old answer the Colonies’ call to fight the British redcoats.

July 25, 2016 12:00 AM EDT Sam Foltz, 22, a punter for the Nebraska Cornhuskers, and Mike Sadler, 24, a former punter for the Michigan State Spartans, were killed Saturday when their car left road in Wisconsin’s Waukesha County and crashed into a tree. The county sheriff’s office says Sadler was driving the car when it lost control on wet pavement at 11:43 p.m., and that speed played a role in the crash, ESPN reports.

Gong Li | TIME

2024-08-09
It’s not nearly her best movie, or her toughest role, but the 1994 Qin dynasty epic The Great Conqueror’s Concubine has a scene that beautifully sums up Gong Li’s screen power. She is bathing in a large wooden vat with the lovely Rosamund Kwan, who screams as a large rat swims toward her. In a flash, Gong Li grabs the rodent and tosses it unceremoniously out of the tub. Many a movie rat, of the human male variety, has tried to strike fear onto Gong Li’s imperious face.
