Calvin Borel (Racing Hall of Fame Jockey)

Profession: Racing Hall of Fame Jockey

Biography: Calvin Borel, nicknamed "Bo'rail" for his style of riding close to the rail, is best known for his multiple Kentucky Derby wins. He is one of the most successful and popular jockeys in American horse racing history.

Borel began riding horses at age eight in match races on bush tracks near his Louisiana hometown. His older brother Cecil, who briefly worked as a jockey before becoming a trainer, guided Calvin's early career. Borel then started his professional career at Delta Downs in Louisiana.

In June 2006, Borel achieved a career breakthrough when he won the Stephen Foster Handicap on a longshot horse. He went on to win his first Kentucky Derby in 2007. In 2009, Borel accomplished the rare feat of winning both the Kentucky Oaks and the Kentucky Derby in the same year.

Borel made history in 2009 by winning the first two legs of the Triple Crown on different horses. He won his third Kentucky Derby in 2010, becoming the first jockey to win three in a four-year span. In 2013, Borel reached 5,000 career victories and was inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame.

Briefly retiring in 2016, Borel soon returned to racing. He has faced personal challenges, including legal issues related to driving while intoxicated. Borel also played himself in the film "50 to 1" (2014), which depicted one of his Kentucky Derby wins.
